Welcome to My Daily Gratitude Affirmations. In a post I wrote, Daily Affirmations for Self Esteem, I shared the definition for an affirmation: “An affirmation is defined as the truth of something. So our daily affirmations are the daily defined truths about ourselves.” My daily gratitude affirmations will serve as the truth in my life; a life that can get cloudy in sticky floors, wet dogs, tired toddlers, cranky teens and stressed husbands. Suddenly, the beauty of the truth gets mixed up with the messy of the hard. But when I pause, and look back with the intention of separating the grace from the mess…I find the gratitude.
My gratitude affirmations will not be about perfection–they will be about grace. Grace to come to this place with only a handful of items to add to my list…grace to overlook this place once in while…grace to realize one mention of gratitude is better than none and living a grateful life is better than blogging about it.
There was a time when my gratitude list consisted only of the photos I downloaded each night onto my computer. I didn’t have grateful words in my arsenal, all I had was the desire to find light. So everyday I would grab my camera around 3pm and walk outside until I found a pocket of light here or a sliver there…and I captured it with a click. After so many clicks of the camera, something began to click in me. There is something to be said for repetition…like a runner pounding the pavement, the repetition of continually taking the next step ushers in its own peaceful cadence. The repetition of looking for and capturing light ushered in light…a light that began to break through a darkness that had enveloped me.
There is a line in the movie The Notebook where Allie says, “I don’t paint anymore. I used to paint all the time. I really loved it.” Scrolling through my computer lately I would tell you, “I used to take pictures.” My Daily Gratitude Affirmations will (hopefully) remind me to take pictures…to seek my gratitude in moments captured whether in a numbered list or through the lens of my recently neglected camera.
