Guess what. I have some good news and some…well, not exactly bad news, just news. The good news, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman…” The other news, there is nothing new here friends. There will be nothing new here. “This is the core of the Gospel and it must never be altered or distorted.” “There is no “new Christianity” waiting to be discovered…” (The Navarre Bible)
It’s good news because we already have everything or should I say, Everyone, we need for our eternal salvation. The bad news, There’s nothing “new and exciting” coming. Now is the time to put in the day to day work, the seemingly mundane, the often ordinary; that’s where and how and when our eternal salvation lives and is “worked out in fear and trembling.”
Compare it to a marriage. First, there is the excitement of getting to know each other better, the newly in love stage where everything is fresh and waiting to be discovered. Then, we move into the engagement and planning the wedding stage. There’s excitement and surprise and gifts and it’s all so magical. And then, the honeymoon! And that’s a unique and intimate time of its own; a culmination of the getting to know each better and the engagement and wedding. And then…daily life.
And in daily life, there are new, often exciting things to learn, but sometimes the learning looks very ordinary, and maybe even messy. Whereas in the getting to know each other and engagement period the learning of each other took place over anything from fancy restaurant dates to playful home cooked meals for two. Now the learning takes place over talk of overtime, student loans, car payments, saving for a mortgage and how to spend the holidays between both parents.
In the beginning of the spiritual life, we may have felt wooed by a glorious God and couldn’t wait to light our candle and open our Bible. And now, time with God may feel like “one more thing” and we often feel oppressed when all it looks like is a list of “Do” and “Don’t.”
Here’s the only “Don’t” we need to focus on, “Don’t lose heart sisters.” Before, our spiritual growth might have looked wide and adventurous. But now, it looks ordinary, but it’s deep. And trust me when I tell you that you do not want to exchange wide for deep. You don’t want to exchange adventurous for intimate. If our Lord living in an ordinary home and relative obscurity for all but thirty years of His life isn’t some type of example of the holiness of the ordinary, I’m not sure what is.
Everything is grace sisters. Everything.Is.Grace.
